Now let’s get into it! As with any party, once you’ve locked down the major items (date, location, theme & guest list) there are really three main areas left to tackle:
- decor
- food & drink
- activities & entertainment
Here, we’ll break down all of the above, giving you everything you need to throw the perfect golf-themed party. But first… a few photos from Sterling’s Hole In One!
decor
In our opinion… the decor makes the party. And, let’s face it, in today’s digital age, getting the perfect Instagram worthy photo or aesthetic content clips for TikTok is a must. We’re here to help you do just that!
We had a few hero pieces for Sterling’s birthday party, but beyond that, we didn’t purchase a ton of decor. We did get some cute golf themed items to serve the food/drinks (but we’ll get to those later).

DIY Custom Golf Cart
The star of the show was certainly Sterling’s custom “golf cart” – you’ve likely come across these on Pinterest before, and we 100% recommend DIYing it yourself. We’ll write another blog post on how we did this soon, but there are plenty of tutorials online in the meantime! Essentially, we just spray painted this truck, and then added a custom license plate and a custom decal.
Wooden three panel backdrop
Second,was the three-panel wooden birthday backdrop. This was also something we DIYed, but it seriously couldn’t have been easier! We bought a three panel wooden backdrop, painted it white and then added a custom decal. Not only was this incredibly easy, but we can also re-paint it and add a new decal for future parties! We definitely think it was worth it to purchase vs. rent, in this scenario.
Photo Banner/High Chair Banner
Next, we ordered a cute photo banner to display a photo from each month of his life (admittedly it didn’t make it into many photos, haha) and a little high chair banner which made for a cute photo-op.
Caddy Outfit/Birthday Hat
Of course, no party would be complete without the perfect party outfit for the birthday boy. Sterling wore this cute Masters caddy outfit with his green crocs. We also bought him a little party hat to wear during his smash cake (annnd to no one’s surprise… he hated it, haha). But give the kid his toy golf clubs and he’s ready for the masters!
flowers & Balloons
No party is complete without some flowers and no first birthday party is complete without balloons! We just sprinkled the flowers throughout the food/drink areas and used the balloons with the backdrop and at the front door so people knew they were at the right house. No noteworthy photos of either, but wanted to make sure we mentioned these key details.
Party Favors
As far as party favors go, we made all the kids these little baseball hats with their initials on them. We used our cricut to cut out the letters in heat transfer vinyl, and then ironed them on with this tiny heat press (a must!). If you don’t own a Cricut, you could simply buy some HTV decals or letter patches to iron on. We also bought these cute little custom “thanks for swinging by” bags and put little toy golf balls and bubbles inside. The fun thing about these party favors is that they all doubled as decor prior to everyone taking them home. The hats were also especially nice because it was a hot and sunny day, so most of the kids ended up wearing them during the party. We love party favors that are will actually be used/appreciated (if not, don’t bother).
food & Drink
When it comes to food and drink, we wholeheartedly believe in using it as a tool to double down on your theme/enhance your decor. The obvious way to do this is through desserts – a custom cake and custom cookies add sooo much!
For Sterling’s party, we also played up the golf theme with the rest of the food. We had little labels to tie it all together – club sandwiches (assorted sub sandwiches from Jimmy John’s), sand traps (rice krispie treats), and chip shots (kettle chips). Note, we used Canva to design the little food labels (don’t mind the one typo ;)). Of course, we also had applesauce pouches for the kiddos (1. because they’re green, and 2. because they love them).
We also ordered personalized golf tees to put in the sandwiches, made fruit skewers using these golf tee skewers and plenty of other on-theme paper products as well (again, these will all be linked at the bottom of the post)!
As for the beverages, we had the usual: water, sparkling water, pop, wine and beer, but then we also added a signature cocktail for the adults (a bootleg – a Minnesota country club classic). Oh, and some lemonade for the kiddos.
Here’s a quick tutorial on how to make a bootleg! Since this cocktail can be made with tequila, vodka, or gin; we recommend making a big batch of the bootleg mix and club soda and telling guests to add their liquor of choice. This way they can also control the strength of their drink (bonus points: make a sign with instructions – we forgot!).
activities & entertainment
And finally, activities and entertainment. Honestly, every party is different, but we don’t typically do a ton in this realm. However, this was a one year old’s birthday party and there were a lot of kids in attendance, so we did need to have some things to keep them busy! We had a kiddie pool for wading, a ball pit (linked a similar one to ours) with color-coordinated balls and an inflatable bounce house. Truly, nothing else was needed for the littles! As for the adults (since this party was very much for the adults as well), we just stuck to the classics: strong drinks and a good playlist. The fact that it was a beautiful summer day and we were in excellent company made this pretty easy!
